Indigo Ora by Ridhi Mehra & Atelier Mon

20th May 2014

To say I’m smitten with all things Ridhi Mehra is an understatement! I began following Ridhi’s work last year once I spotted Sonam in that dreamy floral Anarkali. And on my wedding shopping trip last Nov I did spot that beauty of an Anarkali at Aza but they didn’t have my size : ( but my mum (a.k.a one stylish Auntie gee) bought a gorgeous coral outfit by Ridhi to wear at my Mehndi night. And Yep I will get round to posting a pic eventually!

Ridhi’s latest collection Indigo Ora is a collaboration with Atelier Mon and I’m crushing on the GORG cream floral embroidered blue anarkali, the cream textured and print anarkali with dhoti pants and all the cute crop tops. I caught up with the lady to find out more about the collaboration……

How did the collaboration come about?

I chose to collaborate with Atelier Mon because of two primary reasons. One being that effortless clothing and effortless fashion jewellery is the need of the hour. The two of them come together like house on fire. The second reason is that the design aesthetics of Atelier Mon and my label definitely coincide somewhere. When I first saw their pieces I could see the thought that had gone into each design and the fact that it was pure understated elegance made me decide that collaboration with them would be ideal to create a collection that was effortless and timeless.

And How did you work together? Were you given a brief?

Working together was a complete pleasure. The jewellery was designed entirely by Atelier Mon. We decided over a few ideas in the preliminary meetings, as what to do. Our initial idea was something totally different, and then after a lot of brainstorming we came up with this lovely well coordinated blue collection. I started designing the garments, we sent the swatches, pictures, and eventually the garments to Atelier Mon for them to be able to design the jewellery pieces accordingly.

What was your inspiration?

What started off as a collection inspired by Middle Eastern- Blue pottery, went on become much more. The prints came from my travels and the motifs I saw on Middle eastern pottery and eventually it became all about creating a few pieces outside my comfort zone and doing something stand off for this collaboration. The final result were pieces that were a combination of prints and embroidery and a lot of western silhouettes. This is also the first time I have done some interesting sarees and anarkali gowns in breathable summer fabrics.

Which is your fave piece in the collection?

Majestic in Blue is my favourite piece from the collection.

When are you coming to the U.K?

Hopefully soon!! I love UK, have been there for 3 years for my undergrad. But no plans as of now, hopefully some opportunity might come my way!!

Check out this fab behind the scenes video from the shoot.

Thanks Ridhi!

Champagne, Canapes and Couture Evening at Faisana Weekend

16th May 2014

Over the last bank holiday I attended the wonderful Champagne, Canapes and Couture evening @ Faisana Weekend. The event was held at the luxurious Crystal Room at the Mayfair Hotel with a show by designers Anita Dongre Rina Dhaka & Bhairavi Jaikishan and Pakistani designers Umar Sayeed, Nida Azwer and Sania Maskatiya as well as a performance by Fasih Rehman.

I have to say a big Congrats to the teams involved in the event-it was a fab evening and my fave part? Getting to chat to the ah-mazing Anita Dongre.

Anita Dongre

I asked her how she got involved with the event.

Radhika wrote to my team and I thought it was a great idea-an event with three Pakistani designers three Indian designers that have never really sold in London. So it was just a good to be a part of and to dip my toes into the London market.

and on that note I had to ask her if she had any continued plans in London.

Honestly, as a brand and as a company we are always looking to open new stores and we are considering a store in London. It’s maybe a year away….I’m hoping to come over with my other brand Global so not really ethnic.

Anita Dongre, Faisaina

Which area gives you the most pleasure designing?

So when I’m sitting on the drawing board for AND and Global Desi its great fun they are high street brands and I get a different kind of pleasure designing those two labels but the bridal market is luxury and its not bound by prices as much so maybe that is like my most luxurious de-stresser and I enjoy that the most because I’m not limited by cost, I just want to make a beautiful lengha- I want it to be light, I want my bride to enjoy it and I’m not doing it with a price point in mind.

Anita Dongre

Which bridal trends are you championing this season?

Since a few months I showed at Lakme fashion week and I showed the bandi, and its been accepted beautifully.I’m showing a couple of Bandi pieces today…showing how you wear it with a gown, showing how you wear it with the lengha, my clients have bought it with a palazzo pant and saris so its something that I put it on the ramp and I’ve told my fashion consultants on store to educate the customer and I love the way that todays young Indian woman is realising that she can invest in pieces but can get more out of them. I don’t even price a bridal lengha as one price which people are amazed so I price the choli or the bandi separately, the lengha seperately, the dupatta separately,so that my consumer comes in and buys any garment she wants and dresses it up or dresses it down

Me with the oh sooo talented Pakistani designer Umar Sayeed.

I’ve heard on the grapevine that following the success of the event the organisers are planning on bringing more talent over for a series of events like this one!

Thanks to Shahid Malik for the fab pics

Fugly Flats, or Fashionably Ugly Flats (yes, that’s really what they’ve been named) are everywhere this season. Designers have reworked them in different styles for S/S 14, and one example is the ’80s pool slider.

There were bling-tastic sliders at Prada and Phillip Lim, metallics at Chloé and crossover styles at Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant, not to mention the original Adidas sliders, which are back too.

For the budget shopper, you’ll find the best high street takes on the trend at Zara, Aldo and Urban Outfitters.
