‘India Fantastique’: Sotheby’s London

3rd September 2012

This morning I attended the press call for Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla’s launch of ‘India Fantastique’- a stunning coffee table book that celebrates their illustrious 25 years in the industry.

“Abu and I thought long and hard about how we wanted to celebrate our milestone, and also about how we would use this celebration to set the vision for our creativity and ourselves in the next twenty five years. It soon becomes clear that a book, or rather two as it turned out to be, was the ideal vehicle.” Sandeep Khosla

The book is a visual treat full of their delicious couture pieces and stunning interiors all beautifully shot by the amazing Ram Shergrill. The uber talented duo are known for their skilful cutting, intricate zardozi + chikan embroidery and the sheer drama of their pieces. They were amongst the first Indian designers to gain global recognition with Harrods, Harvey Nicks & Neiman Marcus stocking their pieces.

Sandeep explained that this was one of their first and most copied designs. It caught the eye of costume designer Lindy Hemming who dressed Sophie Marceau in the jacket for ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ from the Bond franchise.

My favourite image- showing the delicate beauty and intricacy of chikan work.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore this beauty at Cannes this year.

Abu & Sandeep’s signature style of re-inventing the traditional has garnered a worldwide celebrity following including Dame Judi Dench, Amitabh Bachchan, and Victoria Beckham (to name a few!) They have also designed costumes for many a film who can forget Madhuri Dixit stunning outfits in Devdas.

Madhuri Dixit in Devdas

This stunning Bridal piece took two and a half months to hand embroider!

Loved this patchwork piece with gorgeous back detail.

Abu & Sandeep have also turned their hand to interiors, taking on one commission at a time- most of which take approx eighteen months as they get involved through the whole process down to every last detail.

‘It’s never about the furniture alone. We want to create a home. So every single thing counts. The Art, the carpets, the silver, even the ashtrays’ Sandeep Khosla

(Abu & Sandeep’s assistant hinted that a homewares line might be a possibility)

The exhibition gives a wonderful opportunity to see Indian Couture at its finest and is on 3-5th September at Sotheby’s. Do not miss it; my photos really don’t do the pieces justice.

The book is available to buy right now from Amazon

Many thanks to Sotheby’s and Abu & Sandeep for the quotes and further information.

India Fantastique: 25 years of Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla

24th August 2012

India Fantastique is a coffee table book that marks 25 years of Abu & Sandeep’s formidable creative partnership. The duo’s couture collections are a celebration of India- full of traditional Indian techniques and craftsmanship which get the delicious Abu & Sandeep spin. The book has two volumes showcasing their fashion as well and their interiors commissions. I’ve shared some of their heavenly fashion images below.

Sotheby’s U.K will be launching the book as well as hosting an exhibition 3rd- 5th Sept.

While searching for images I came across Abu & Sandeep’s blog. I particularly enjoyed the MADE IN INDIA post where Sandeep discusses his views and suggestions in moving the Indian Fashion industry forward. Well worth a read.

Shyamal & Bhumika : LFW Winter/Festive 2012

20th August 2012

Shyamal & Bhumika named their collection ‘Maharaja’ and it certainly was a rich and opulent affair. Creatively the collection hasn’t moved on much from their last- the same jewel tone palette remains as well as the use of similar weaves and embroidery but saying that I’m sure the collection will be a hit with Brides and Grooms- and hey Ralph Lauren has built a career tweaking his signature style each season maybe Shyamal & Bhumika will do the same.

Anita Dongre: LFW Winter/Festive 2012

10th August 2012

I’m slowly making my way through the yumminess of LFW and am sharing my favourites from the week. Anita Dongre’s collection is up there in my top three (you can tell I love it as I couldn’t even limit the post to a few pics!) The collection had a Turkish/Middle Eastern feel with its rich colour palette of vibrant oranges, reds, pinks, golds and azure blue- the influence spilled over into the prints with gorgeous Moorish patterns that were beautifully mixed with contrasting prints. The other key trend to note is the use of Benares weaves especially stunning used simply in the maxi dresses. Anita’s an expert on putting a spin on the traditional in her own feminine way and I’ll be coo-ing over this collection for a long time- ! (and don’t get my started on the bridal leghna Preeti Desai wore – WOW! ) Enjoy the pics

Payal Singhal: LFW Winter/Festive 2012

4th August 2012

Ohhhh such prettiness from Ms Singhal on day one of LFW. The collection ‘India in Colour’ was a heady mix of colour and embroidery from all over India. The colour palette veered from the vibrant pinks of Rajasthan to the more subdued tones of the East with stunning Abhla and Mukaish work added to the mix. Beautiful Ms Singhal, just beautiful!

Zara A/w 12 jewellery love

17th July 2012

First drop A/w 12 goodies dropped into Zara this week and its the jewellery that was giving me palpitations! I adore the nod to Chanel’s pre-fall collection in the new costume jewellery and was able to snap up the stunning Emerald necklace. It’s a perfect bold fusion piece that will rock with Indian clothes and at £30 an amazing find.

I am still in search of the pink stone piece though which looks just as yum (I have my fingers and toes crossed I’ll still be able to find one in the city)

Spotlight: Mona Vora Couture

15th June 2012

Last week I went to meet Mona Vora, the Grande Dame of U.K Asian Bridal Couture. For a while now, I’ve been keen to add a new category of posts where I meet experts in the Asian Fashion & Beauty industry and ask them to impart some expert knowledge and tips. So, having Mona agree to be my first meet feels like a wonderful way to start!

As soon as I arrived Mona was incredibly welcoming and I warmed to her immediately. I loved her passion and enthusiasm for Bridal Couture and I equally loved her fearlessness and self-confidence. It’s those last two qualities that turned a natural flair for design into a successful business. So, not only did I get to meet a talented designer I got to meet an inspiring Asian business woman too.

Mona originally completed a degree in Business Management and started working outside of fashion first. She enjoyed designing her own outfits and friends and family admiring her work started commissioning pieces from her. This soon led to orders from friends of friends and that’s when her hobby turned into a full time career. Sixteen years on, she has a beautiful showroom in Barnet as well as a workshop in India. All dyeing, designing, embroidery and embellishment are done in house so she has the utmost control on quality and time.

A warning to all brides this is the area when the nightmare can occur- we all know brides that have been let down by poor workmanship or bad fitting. It’s imperative to choose a reputable designer like Mona.

As for her designs, the pictures say it all – her show room really is a candy shop of all things delicious and sparkly. There’s every style imaginable and you can tell Mona gets a real buzz from making each and every bride feel like a Queen on her special day. Currently, she designs on average for THREE HUNDRED Brides a year (yep, I almost fell off my chair when I heard that number too). So, to say Mona’s more than qualified to give some tips is an understatement. Here are her top five tips.

DO YOUR RESEARCH.. Going into Bridal showrooms can be intimidating and the endless choices of colours, embroideries and styles can be overwhelming. Mona encourages brides to do some homework, collect a handful of magazine tears or pictures of things you like so it acts as a starting point on your first appointment. Make sure it’s a handful though! A big book of images will just confuse everyone!

BE OPEN MINDED.. Just because you’ve fallen in love with say Aishwarya Rai’s wedding lengha, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll suit you. Mona gave the example of a top heavy bride that was insistent on an empire line gown that wouldn’t have suited her body shape. Mona found a similar sample gown (that was designed as a maternity wear example) made the bride try it on and then only was she able to see how unflattering the style was for her body shape.

DON’T FOLLOW TRENDS . I loved Mona’s reasoning for this, something I hadn’t thought of. She explained if purple’s the colour of the season that will mean at least ten or more of the guests will be wearing purple and as she says her job is to always make the bride stand out above everyone else.

DON’T BUY READY MADE.. Mona explains ready made outfits rarely fit anyone properly as we are all different shapes and that a well fitted custom piece can make all the difference in a making a pretty outfit into a showstopper. She also adds that people presume a custom made piece is always more expensive that’s not always true. So, do your research and where possible get custom made.

BE ORIGINAL AND ADVENTUROUS. She says rightly so, why copy someone else’s outfit. It’s your big day, your outfit should be adventurous, classy, original and lastly make you look and feel even more amazing then you ever thought you could.

Big thanks to Mona Vora, for taking the time to meet me!

Pakistan Bridal Couture week: Mehdi

15th May 2012

There were so many gorgeous collections on show at PBCW but I am ALWAYS drawn to the softer colour palettes and it was Mehdi’s dreamy designs were my favourites. I love the sheer layers, soft neutral colours, delicate embroidery and embellishment and the chic high collar detailing.

12th May 2012

I was flicking through Grazia India (love the fact I can buy the latest issues on Itunes!) and I came across L’Oreal’s new ‘Wedding’ collection. The name’s are ohh so romantic -Sculpted Tiara, Vintage Embrace, Sea Shell and Swirling Sands as are the descriptions but the actual styles? I’m just not loving them, maybe I’m just too safe and need to be more adventurous? What do you think?

Anita Dongre New Bridal Showroom: WOW!

25th April 2012

How stunning is Anita Dongre’s new showroom? Get me on a plane now!!! I’ve really been struggling to find all my Bridal outfits (the Hindu ceremony is with the capable hands of Mira Taylor but the rest I’m just CLUELESS about!) I’ve picked up the latest issues of Asiana and Viya and I liked NOTHING- well I liked bits and pieces but nothing made me think wow- that’s the one I want. Overall I just found the styles featured a little too bling tastic for me and going to India regularly has spoiled me as a lot of the U.K stores are a little slow in catching up with the new trends. Saying that I probably haven’t scratched the surface of what’s out there and I just need to go visit some more stores – or better still get on a plane! (the reason I’ve been a little reluctant of buying Bridal wear in India is that – ready wear doesn’t always work for me, I’m 5’9 (A giant in Asian girl terms!) and I think if I were to get something made I’d want to be there for the full duration in order for fittings and basically to chase the designer to get things done on time and correctly! (I’ve worked in fashion with Indian factories and learnt the lesson ages ago that to get things done you have to chase, chase, chase!) Well looking at the pics I may just have to go over for a few months- such STUNNING pieces!!!

Love, love, love the peach and pink lenghas!
