Mani J: Udaipur Tea Party

30th October 2015

Mani J love continues here on The Asian Fashion Journal. Her latest collection- Udaipur Tea Party popped up on my Insta feed last week and is def worthy of share. This collection for me is her strongest. The silhouettes and styling are youthful and pretty but with an urban edge- Like the cut out bustier, capes, bombers and slevelettes- all of which add more drama to an Indian outifit but can equally look hot paired with western pieces.

SONAM KAPOOR: DOLLY KI DOLI

23rd January 2015

I’m sooooo looking forward to seeing Sonam Kapoor’s Dolly Ki Doli this month. Her character in the film is a con artist who marries different men and then runs away with their money- So that’s a whole lot of weddings outfits in one film- fash overload!!! not that I’m complaining, it’ll be the main reason I go to see the film. The posters show her in a stunning blue Anita Dongre lengha as well as a mint and coral Jade lengha but the outfits in the Babaji Ka Thullu are OMG. She looks Amazeballs in Manish Arora and her male co-stars look pretty good too.

Asian Fashion, Wedding & Lifestyle Bloggers Meet Up @ The Book Club : Sept 14

12th September 2014

On the Sunday just gone I organised the first UK Asian Bloggers Meet Up. Saying I organised the event is a bit of a stretch- I just sent out a few tweets and the lovely ladies below responded! I’m still soooooo surprised by the turn out. I was expecting maybe 3 or 4 bloggers might tweet back a yes but we made it to double figures! Yeah baby! there were twelve us in total.

I chose the chilled out The Book Club in Shoreditch for our meet up- where we took over a long table and turned up the noise level in the venue (apologies to the other diners!) The afternoon was so much fun, I enjoyed gossiping about the highs and lows of Asian Fashion, Weddings and Beauty with people that love the industry as much as I do! I was also super excited that Toronto based super star designer and stylist Mani J was over in London. So I invited her to the bloggers meet too.

Here’s some pics of the event and thanks to @Ashichick (Nazma’s sis who took the group pic but can be spotted in the yellow jumper below!)

Manish Malhotra Store Review & My Manish Civil Ceremony Lengha

7th August 2014

I recently posted My Mumbai Wedding Shopping Guide and thought I’d follow up with some individual store reviews. First up is Manish Malhotra. He has two flagship stores opposite each other (address’ are below). One is for full on Bridal yuminess and the other houses his diffusion ranges. I was looking for something lighter to wear for my Civil Ceremony (I didn’t want a Western Wedding Gown) so choose a beauty of an Ivory Lengha from his diffusion store. Actually my Mum and Sis choose it and made me try it on. I was reluctant to buy another Lengha and had it in my mind that I’d buy an Ivory sari. My thinking was- if I buy a sari I’d prob wear it again.

Manish Malhotra, The Asian Fashion Journal, Nina Patel, WEdding, Lengha, Shaadi, MumbaiPic of the Diffusion Store via Manish Malhotra Facebook

Well they got me in it and that’s when I fell in love with the Lengha. Plus the sales assistant said I can get a Sari made to match the blouse as well as get an embroidered or embellished body made to wear with the skirt and Duppatta making it look like a gown! She said its what lots of customers do and when we met our tailor a couple of days later he said the same. Well you learn something new everyday hey? (or does this just show how clueless us NRI brides are!)

manish malhotra, India, Fashion, Shaadi, Wedding, Lengha, Sari, A snap I took before we left the store so I remembered what I’d ordered!

We asked if the sample could be adjusted so we could take it back with us and the asst measured away and said it could be possible but it wouldn’t be comfortable for me in the armhole and it would be much better to get a fresh made to measure piece done. Like I’ve said previously after hearing so many horror stories of brides ordering pieces while in India only to receive ill fitting outfits posted over I was a little reluctant but as it was only one order we thought we’d take the risk. Also we paid by credit card- hey you never know its better to have that security in case you things do go wrong and you need to dispute the charge.

manish malhotra, India, Fashion, Shaadi, Wedding, Lengha, Sari, Detail of the gorgeous thread work

We were given a delivery date and told to expect a phone call a few days prior to re-confirm delivery address. And guess what? Mansi rang us like she said she would when she said she would and the package came over on time.

The blouse fit was like a second skin, shaping and lifting in all the right places (if you know what I mean) even though it was essentially a tiny blouse. The skirt was really loose on me although I think that was down to the upping of pre wedding workouts- I had to get my tailor over here to adjust the skirt.

From the experience I had of shopping from the store I’d highly recommend shopping at Manish Malhotra. I would happily order made to measure pieces from the store in the future (just got to wait for my sis wedding now!)

Manish Malhotra, Real Bride, Wedding, Shaadi, Lengha, The Asian Fashion Journal, Nina Patel I’ve cropped my Hubs out as well as my head. As much as I’m fine with sharing pics of me normally- I’m just not as comfortable sharing my wedding pics.

Vogue India Guest Blog Post: Pernia Pops in London with Masaba

22nd November 2013

Here’s a re-blog of my latest guest blog post for Vogue India. I have to say it was soooo exciting to meet the first ladies of Indian fashion! They have both achieved so much in their careers and are two of the many exciting influencers that are making contemporary Indian fashion as exciting as it is…..

Blogger Nina Patel meets two of Indian fashion’s favourite ladies putting up a flash mob-style show for their overseas audience
Pernia Qureshi and Masaba Gupta popped up at London’s Montcalm hotel on Friday night to organise a fun and fabulous flash mob to support the work of three charities — Akshaya Patra, Pratham and Women’s India Association.

I managed to get a quick chat with Pernia and Masaba before the event to find out more about it and why they decided to get involved.

“Every couple of months, Pernia’s Pop-Up hosts different events and we always make sure we connect the event with a charity. So when Roshni came to me with this idea we thought it would be a great way to support these charities and to connect with our London audience,” says Qureshi.

“Pernia’s Pop-Up has bought Masaba here to do a really fun fashion show, it’s going to be flash mob style, something different for London, and everything that is shown here will be on Pernia’s Pop Up shop tomorrow. We’re showing a mix of Masaba’s latest collection mixed with her greatest hits that people can’t get enough of, like the hand print sari.”

I asked Masaba if she was aware of her UK audience.

“I know from my Twitter and my Insta feed how many people are buying my label and from where. Since we stock at Pernia’s Pop-Up, we know the response the clothes are getting and that London girls are fans of the label.”

sonam kapoor, fashion flash mob, pernia quereshi, pernia's pop up, masaba gupta,

Masaba and Pernia, the key sponsor of the evening. Image: Shahid Malik.

I also asked Pernia how important the international market is for Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop.

“Very important,” says Qureshi. “I have always said our USP is that we are an Indian design platform for a global audience. Eventually, I want some unknown schoolgirl in Japan to being wearing Masaba. That’s my vision. I want people all over the world to know about Indian design because we have so much talent. We are so good at what we do that it’s a pity not enough people know about it.”

We also talked about how important it is for Pernia to be supporting new design talent and the fact that she is always looking out for new labels that haven’t had a platform in the past, like Ridhi Mehra, to add to the site.

Pernia said that new additions to the site will include footwear label Saint G and an ethnic label Malasa, which she’s excited about.

The event was sold out. Here are some pictures from the night.

Spotlight: Payal Singhal Lakme Fashion Week Winter /Festive 2013

16th Sept 2013

Yep, I’m a few weeks late with this but ohh Well! It’s a collection that’s still worth sharing!

Payal Singhal’s Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive collection was a collection of two parts. The first part was an exciting mash up of traditional shapes which were given a further edge with graphic prints in a palette of blush tones and inky blacks. The second part was more in keeping with the pretty Indo-Western aesthetic she’s known for and will keep fans happy but as you can tell it was the first part that wowed me- so here I am sharing those images!

And as for inspiration- the collection was inspired by the symmetry and the relationship between nature and architecture found in ‘Char Bagh’ which translates as four gardens and refers to the Persian style of garden where the space is divided into four equal parts by either a walkway or water channels. The most famous example is the Taj Mahal.

Shaana Levy & Uraaz Bahl’s wedding

3rd June 2013

I think I’m still feeling soppy after my engagement party as I don’t usually post wedding pics! but when I saw these pics from Shaana Levy’s wedding to Uraaz Bahl I had to share them. Shaana looks so natural and elegant in her Sabyasachi lengha and statement jewels. It’s a really toned down look for an Indian bride and that’s the reason I love it.

Blog Crush: Border & Fall

25th May 2013

After all the distractions of the last few weeks its been good to get back into blogging mode. It’s not just the writing that I’ve missed but the reading of my fave blogs too. One blog that has quickly become a must read is Border & Fall. The blog’s editor, Boutique branding expert- Malika V Kashyap splits the blog into four sections- People & Spaces, Wardrobes, News and Journal. The later is the most interesting section, it looks beyond the glossy facade of Indian fashion and gives opinons and insights into the inner workings of the industry by leading Indian creatives.

This month’s issue is titled Digital and includes web genius Sita Wadhwani, editor of Vogue.In-laying out her five learnings, an interview with Pernia Quereshi and her vision for growth at Pernia’s Pop Up Shop as well as designer Bindu Reddy discussing how she works with the digital medium to create her work.
