Mani J: Udaipur Tea Party

30th October 2015

Mani J love continues here on The Asian Fashion Journal. Her latest collection- Udaipur Tea Party popped up on my Insta feed last week and is def worthy of share. This collection for me is her strongest. The silhouettes and styling are youthful and pretty but with an urban edge- Like the cut out bustier, capes, bombers and slevelettes- all of which add more drama to an Indian outifit but can equally look hot paired with western pieces.

mani j 1Love this blouse.

Anushree Reddy Lakme Fashion Week 15 & Her Top Bridal Tips

3rd April 2015

I am a an Anushree fan girl. I loveee her work. Yes, her work is really obvious and lacks the creative depth and flair of the Rahul Mishra’s of the world…BUT WHO CARES!!! Sometimes you need obvious, you need pretty, you need pastels, you need florals, you need youthful, and you need super girly! and her collections have them all in spades.

I was in the Aza Altamount store for a fitting of one of her Anarkali’s. This crazy auntie gee comes over and starts swooning over it and says to me can you take it off I want my daughter to try it on. So I told the crazy lady too late I’ve already bought it- she doesn’t listen and she says that’s fine let my daughter try it on and take that one and you can place an order….errmmm no way Jose!!! See how much love people have over Anushree’s sugar and spice! (and how crazy Indian aunties are!) lol!

Anyway back to the post and to the yummy pics of her recent #RoyalCourtyard collection.

I also had a brief chat with her at the Aashni & Co Wedding show in Jan and asked her for her top three tips for Brides….

Firstly, I think a lot of people go with what they think they are supposed to wear. I wore pink for my wedding opposed to red because that’s what I liked. Basically I think its very important to stick to what you like.

Secondly, I think its important to go heavy I think a lot of people say don’t over do it- but its your wedding you’re getting married once so you might as well dress up and go all out. I wouldn’t advise diluting a garment- you wouldn’t want to be looking like a guest on your wedding! Go all out!

Thirdly get your make up and hair right. It makes a big difference and really finishes a look. So get that right and you’re set.

Also I’ve got to say I’m a big fan of the Anushree’s social media especially all the behind the scenes shots.

Affordable Designer Bridal Shopping Mumbai

27th March 2015

My most popular blog post of all time is My Mumbai Shopping Guide post. The majority of feedback I’ve had from the post has been incredibly positive. Although I have recently felt the raised eyebrow of a couple of my fellow bloggers who believe that my designer wedding trosseau is not in all brides budgets. Firstly I’ve got to say- I’m from the ‘each to their own’ kinda way of thinking. I don’t think my budget should be judged and as with everything in life its all relative… some people would think I spent a lot on my wedding shopping and others would think I spent peanuts!!! Secondly there’s this notion that Indian designer wear = super duper expensive. I always say if you can afford to shop in the likes of  UK designers -Sonas, Mona Vora and Ekta Solanki whose bridal lenghas start at £2k up you can buy from the likes of Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi.

Ok, so I know the eyebrow raisers will say what if you don’t have £2k to spend…even with half the budget I’d still rather spend my money on designer- the thing is its completely different in India. There are a huge variety of designers all offering different price points. I’d rather buy a £800 Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor wedding lengha then a Sabyasachi knock off from the likes of Kalki, Seasons, Friendship etc in Santa Cruz for the same price….but that’s just me saying what I’d do…each to their own!

So here’s my list of designer stores in Mumbai that are more wallet friendly than the likes of Tarun, Manish, Anamika and Co….

Tamanna Kapoor Punjabi

cocktail

Remember Cocktail? Diana Penty looks gorgeous in a Tamanna lengha

t punjabi kapoor

Tamanna store is small which is the norm for smaller designer stores -there’s maybe room for about 30-odd designs.  My sis bought a gorgeous lime green gota work lengha for her Mehndi night for £800 from her. It’s an absolute beauty and I know brides have picked the same piece in hot pinks/red and oranges for their bridal lenghas. Sonaakshi Raaj recommended us Tamanna and we went in three days before we flew back home. In a day and a half she got the blouse made so my sister could have a fitting before she left and six weeks later as promised the lengha was couried over.  Tamanna was fantastic and I can’t recommend her and her work enough!

Address: Gurmukh Sagar Bldg, 29th Road, Pali Village, Bandra West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400050, India

We didn’t have an appointment but would advise you to arrange one to make sure Tamanna is in-store.

Chamee and Palak

Chamee & Palak 1 Chamee & Palak 2 Chamee & Palak

Again this designer duo’s store is small – maybe forty odd designs in store but they are all very pretty and youthful. They will custom make any of the designs in store and can work with you to design a special piece. We didn’t place an order from them as they were one of the last stores we visited and had already done most of our shopping. My mum’s friend had placed orders with them and has been happy with the service they provide. This store is by appointment only

Shruti Sheth

Another small store- again maybe thirty odd designs, I visited her store but didn’t buy anything but her designs are lovely esp her heavy blouses (a little Jade-esque I might add but without the Jade price tag).

Shruti Sheth– Hill Crest, 10th Road, Opp Absolute Spa, Juhu, Vile Parle West, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India 400049

Again we didn’t make an appointment but would advise making an appointment when the designer is in store.

Fuel

Fuel is another multi brand designer store and its on my original list. Fuel also carries a real mix of price points and styles as well as some really fab accessories. Labels stocked include Sabyasachi, Peppermint Diva, Rina Dhaka & Rohit & Rahul Ghandi.

Vandana

vandana

Vandana is a fabric store in Mumbai that I’ve already raved about. It’s my go to store to buy fabrics to make outfits/ saris for smaller occasions- like poojas or friends mehndi nights etc…they have hundreds and hundreds of fabrics and borders so you can be your own designer! Their sales assistants are amazing and will help you combine fabrics to create individual pieces. I had a crop top/high waist pencil skirt, churidaar pants and dupatta outfit made. Cost of fabrics was £100 and my tailor charged £30 for stitching. LOVE this store. Both my sis and I bought our bridesmaid saris from here.

304, 305 Rajdoot Chsl, Linking Road Khar West, Opp Rajkumar Jewellers, Mumbai 40005

I’m going to finish off by saying it’s worth noting that Indian designer shopping is very different to shopping in stores on Green St, Ealing Rd and Southall Broadway. The designer stores don’t carry large ranges (apart from the big designer names), everything is hung up and there’s no sitting in front of a wall of saris that are pulled out to show customers. It is much more time consuming shopping from designer stores but personally I think its worth it for the different pieces you find there.

Hope you guys find the post useful and Happy Shopping!

SONAM KAPOOR: DOLLY KI DOLI

23rd January 2015

I’m sooooo looking forward to seeing Sonam Kapoor’s Dolly Ki Doli this month. Her character in the film is a con artist who marries different men and then runs away with their money- So that’s a whole lot of weddings outfits in one film- fash overload!!! not that I’m complaining, it’ll be the main reason I go to see the film. The posters show her in a stunning blue Anita Dongre lengha as well as a mint and coral Jade lengha but the outfits in the Babaji Ka Thullu are OMG. She looks Amazeballs in Manish Arora and her male co-stars look pretty good too.

Asian Fashion, Wedding & Lifestyle Bloggers Meet Up @ The Book Club : Sept 14

12th September 2014

On the Sunday just gone I organised the first UK Asian Bloggers Meet Up. Saying I organised the event is a bit of a stretch- I just sent out a few tweets and the lovely ladies below responded! I’m still soooooo surprised by the turn out. I was expecting maybe 3 or 4 bloggers might tweet back a yes but we made it to double figures! Yeah baby! there were twelve us in total.

I chose the chilled out The Book Club in Shoreditch for our meet up- where we took over a long table and turned up the noise level in the venue (apologies to the other diners!) The afternoon was so much fun, I enjoyed gossiping about the highs and lows of Asian Fashion, Weddings and Beauty with people that love the industry as much as I do! I was also super excited that Toronto based super star designer and stylist Mani J was over in London. So I invited her to the bloggers meet too.

Here’s some pics of the event and thanks to @Ashichick (Nazma’s sis who took the group pic but can be spotted in the yellow jumper below!)

Manish Malhotra Store Review & My Manish Civil Ceremony Lengha

7th August 2014

I recently posted My Mumbai Wedding Shopping Guide and thought I’d follow up with some individual store reviews. First up is Manish Malhotra. He has two flagship stores opposite each other (address’ are below). One is for full on Bridal yuminess and the other houses his diffusion ranges. I was looking for something lighter to wear for my Civil Ceremony (I didn’t want a Western Wedding Gown) so choose a beauty of an Ivory Lengha from his diffusion store. Actually my Mum and Sis choose it and made me try it on. I was reluctant to buy another Lengha and had it in my mind that I’d buy an Ivory sari. My thinking was- if I buy a sari I’d prob wear it again.

Manish Malhotra, The Asian Fashion Journal, Nina Patel, WEdding, Lengha, Shaadi, MumbaiPic of the Diffusion Store via Manish Malhotra Facebook

Well they got me in it and that’s when I fell in love with the Lengha. Plus the sales assistant said I can get a Sari made to match the blouse as well as get an embroidered or embellished body made to wear with the skirt and Duppatta making it look like a gown! She said its what lots of customers do and when we met our tailor a couple of days later he said the same. Well you learn something new everyday hey? (or does this just show how clueless us NRI brides are!)

manish malhotra, India, Fashion, Shaadi, Wedding, Lengha, Sari, A snap I took before we left the store so I remembered what I’d ordered!

We asked if the sample could be adjusted so we could take it back with us and the asst measured away and said it could be possible but it wouldn’t be comfortable for me in the armhole and it would be much better to get a fresh made to measure piece done. Like I’ve said previously after hearing so many horror stories of brides ordering pieces while in India only to receive ill fitting outfits posted over I was a little reluctant but as it was only one order we thought we’d take the risk. Also we paid by credit card- hey you never know its better to have that security in case you things do go wrong and you need to dispute the charge.

manish malhotra, India, Fashion, Shaadi, Wedding, Lengha, Sari, Detail of the gorgeous thread work

We were given a delivery date and told to expect a phone call a few days prior to re-confirm delivery address. And guess what? Mansi rang us like she said she would when she said she would and the package came over on time.

The blouse fit was like a second skin, shaping and lifting in all the right places (if you know what I mean) even though it was essentially a tiny blouse. The skirt was really loose on me although I think that was down to the upping of pre wedding workouts- I had to get my tailor over here to adjust the skirt.

From the experience I had of shopping from the store I’d highly recommend shopping at Manish Malhotra. I would happily order made to measure pieces from the store in the future (just got to wait for my sis wedding now!)

Manish Malhotra, Real Bride, Wedding, Shaadi, Lengha, The Asian Fashion Journal, Nina Patel I’ve cropped my Hubs out as well as my head. As much as I’m fine with sharing pics of me normally- I’m just not as comfortable sharing my wedding pics.

My Mumbai Wedding Shopping Guide

4th April 2014

In the words of slika slika Slim shaddy- Guess whose back! (I’m sure you’ve all been missing my random music links-lol!) It’s been a long few weeks since my last post-well Nov to be exact. I was too busy getting MARRIED!!!!- still can’t believe its all over now. I will be bringing you some details of my wedding in coming posts but got to kick things off with a post that’s been in my drafts folder for TOO long.

NRI: Mumbai Wedding Shopping Guide

I had found my dream of a wedding lengha at Aashni & Co (I will be posting a review of the store soon) early last year and kinda thought well if I can find a beauty of a Sabyasachi piece in London I’ll be able to get the rest of my outfits here….but the months rolled by- we regularly checked in with our favourite U.K Asian stores and we just couldn’t find what we were looking for. So off we went last Oct (we literally booked the tickets on a Weds and headed off on Thurs!)

We didn’t really have any prior experience of shopping in Mumbai but writing the blog has helped me discover all these exciting designers whose stores went on our list and we also asked everyone possible for tips so we went with a pretty good list which grew with recommendations from people there. I can’t say it’s a comprehensive list but it’s a good starting point for NRI Brides to be doing their wedding shopping.

I say NRI Brides because the majority of outfits we bought- we had adjusted or had the blouses made and brought them back with us as we weren’t keen on having everything made and sent over. Although, we did order some made to measure pieces from Manish Malhotra and Rohit Verma which I’ll post a review on in a separate post.

Aza

Aza is a multi-designer brand store and the collections vary from stores so we visited both. We had more luck at the Altamount store- I found an Arpita Mehta lengha for my Mehndi night and a Varun Bahl gown for my reception and my Mum bought a gorgeous Ridhi Mehra outfit. I have to say though if you’re looking for styles that you want to buy there and then the size range is limited. I’d say the largest size is 12/14 although if you don’t mind ordering they will order a made to measure style for you. A big thanks to Harshika at the Altamount store she really looked after us and all the pieces were altered within four days.

Ensemble

Ensemble is another multi designer store. Have to say this was the only store on the list that we experienced frosty service from the staff. I don’t know if it was a blip/bad day but we didn’t feel comfortable shopping and ended up buying Guarav Gupta pieces that we’d seen at Ensemble at alternative stores (because we didn’t even want to stay in the store long enough to try on the pieces!) I’ve still included the store on the list because they do carry a fab range of product and like I said it could have been a blip day.

After drooling over Jade by Monica & Karishma over the Indian blogosphere it was soooo exciting to check out their store. I personally found the Bridal lengha range just too heavy for me but loved the heavy blouses that you could buy either on their own or mix and match with a sari or skirt. Really pretty and timeless designs. And I’m in LOVE with their Bohemian Princess collection that they recently showcased at Fashion Week!

Regular readers know how much I heart Sabyasachi’s work. I adore the way he celebrates and reinvents the beauty of Indian embroidery and embellishment. As I’d already bought my Sabya bridal lengha from Aashni & co we were looking for saris and unfortunately the week we’d visited the stock was really low- as in there were only three saris in stock! so unfortunately we left empty handed but the store itself (the bridal showroom is on the ground floor and the lighter pieces were upstairs in a neighboring building) is a beauty. Its like stepping back in time and a gorgeous backdrop to his designs.

Peacock Pret by Falguni and Shane Peacock

Ok so I’m not the biggest fan of the Peacock Pret by Falguni and Shande Peacock’s Indian wear (LOVE the western wear though) but I had to include their address on the list. It’s a store full of girlie colours, feathers and bling so if that’s your thing def take a look.

I can’t remember what the prices start at but remember the semi formal saris my sis was looking at were around £1500/£2000 mark

The Varun Bahl store is in the same building as Sabyasachi’s and he shares the store with Karan Johar (uuummm I didn’t even know Karan Johar designed Sherwanis?!) I adore Varun’s gowns (I wore one of his designs at my reception) and my sis picked up a gorgeous mint sari with applique work and sequin blouse from the store. I have to add that the service at the store could do with being improved. My sis blouse piece and petticoat needed to be ordered in from Delhi and they assured us that it would be in store ready for collection three days later (which was our last day in Mumbai). We rang in the morning and they told us the parcel would def be there for 11am. So we turned up and it wasn’t there and there didn’t seem to be any real action in locating the parcel until we said we’d call our credit card company and block the charge. Then they started ringing round for it- we went off to lunch and a few other stores and when we returned the parcel had come in. I know you could say it was only a few hours late but if all the stores we’d shopped at had done the same we prob wouldn’t have been able to get everything in eight days like we did.

Manish Malhotra

Sabyasachi, Ogaan,India, Mumbai, wedding, shaadi, sari, lengha, bride, bridal, s/s 14, Fizaa, Zarine Khan, Tip Top, Bangles, Costume Jewellery, Manish Malhotra, Diffusion

Both the Manish Bridal store and the newer diffusion store opp were soooooooo busy with Brides to be and its pretty easy to see why- the stores are full of yumminess. He is a Bridal King for a reason! I bought a pretty Ivory lengha to wear for my Civil Ceremony (I didn’t want to wear an English style dress) and had to have the piece ordered- I was reluctant to place an order but being taller than the average the piece in the showroom couldn’t be adjusted to fit. I will post a review on the Store soon.

Rohit Verma

I know the Hare by Rohit Verma collection was really popular at Bibi London but since Rohit stopped supplying the store the only place to get the real deal is in India. His showroom is in a real mess. Gowns, lenghas, saris and anarkalis are squashed together on rails that make it hard to browse BUT the man himself and his lovely sis know the collection inside out and instinctively know which styles suit who. Once they knew what occasions we were shopping for they pulled out some beauties and we bought several pieces.

Rohhit Verma Haute Couture, 101/64D Keshav Kunj, opposite standard Chartered Bank, Linking Road, Santacruz(West), Mumbai, Maharashtra, India 400054

Vandana

Ok so I’ve been in plenty of fabric and embellishment stores & markets in Delhi for work but I’ve never been to a store like Vandana before. If you want to design your own sari or anarkali this is the place to go. They carry hundreds of beautiful fabrics including silks, bhandanis, brocades and you go from one section to another picking out fabrics- we started off with some sari blouse fabric we liked then moved over to the chiffon section to match a sari then went downstairs to match sari borders and latkans! We ended up buying all my peach bridesmaid saris from here. We only discovered the store on our penultimate day otherwise I know we would have have bought way more! And all the staff are fantastic so even if you don’t think you are much of a designer they will help you match fabrics together.

We were recommended Tip Top by designer Rohit Verma for bangles (they do costume jewellery too but the sets weren’t that exciting) The bangles on the other hand were drool worthy- here’s the set I had bought to go with my white Manish Malhotra lengha…Prettyyyyy

All the shops are spread across Mumbai and I’d recommend asking your concierge (we stayed at the Grand Hyatt– will post a review soon) or driver to group stores together so you don’t waste time. And yep I know there’s plenty of amazing stores that haven’t made the list- like I said these are the stores we went to-I’m sure I’ll be adding to the list.

Happy Shopping

Spotlight: Aruna Seth Interview

2nd October 2013

I missed this year’s Asian Achievers Awards but did take a look at the event’s Press Releases. It was fab to see that this year’s ceremony paid particular homage to female achievement and there was one nominee I was curious to find out more about- Aruna Seth. I’ve ft. her pretty pumps in an earlier blog post and was keen to interview the talented designer. And a few e-mails later here it is!
Thanks Aruna!

Describe your brand in one sentence?

Luxury elegant and classic shoes!

What’s the story behind the label?

We started up the Aruna Seth brand 5 years ago. Aruna Seth was started as I wanted to create lovely shoes for the Red Carpets. I’ve always loved designer shoes, I owned a personal collection of 150 pairs before starting the Aruna Seth brand. I then studied footwear design at London College of Fashion, moved to Italy for a year to make the shoes in the same factory as Prada and the label Aruna Seth was born! I’ve achieved a great deal of what I wanted, I’ve seen the shoes on the Red Carpets of a great deal of celebrities!

Candy Rose, Leather, Aruna Seth, Bride, Bridal, Shoes, Pumps, Wedding How dreamy are these Candy Rose Leather Pumps with pastel gem detail?

Does your part Indian heritage influence your designs?

I love using colours and jewelled elements to Aruna Seth shoes! If you look at my red and emerald green designs etc they have certainly been influenced by India and the vivid colours from the region! India is a great place to visit to pick up new ideas and trims. Another great thing about India is the amount of events Indian ladies need to go to!

Describe your design process?

I oversee the whole process, from researching ideas, to drawing the ideas on paper! Aruna Seth is innovative and we are always on the look-out for new ideas for our shoe designs. For example our ‘Candy’ shoes have a new jewelled heel on that has been seen no-where else. I’ll travel to Italy to chat with the Artisans about how to create our designs and lasts! The shoes are made in small quantities by hand and I’ll fly over during manufacture to check the quality! It is an absolute joy seeing the shoes from drawing to end result as I’ll do most of the client appointments myself!

What have been your personal highlights for the brand so far?

I adore Kate Hudson and she was spotted wearing my grey Farfalla shoes at a event at Annabels Night-club. We flew the Aruna Seth brand over to Los Angeles for an event pre-Golden Globes and Oscars! While we were out there I got invited to the Golden Globes myself, it was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget! It was amazing to be able to wear Aruna Seth shoes myself on the Red Carpets with an amazing dress!

What are your future plans for the brand?

We concentrated on the US for many years but we’ve seen the huge potential for ladies who love our shoes in India and Asia so we will be concentrating our efforts there from now on. It’s great because the ladies love our peep-toe shoes and the crystal butterfly for events. And ladies in India have a lot of events to attend and dress for! Especially the weddings and the lead-up to this!!

What tips would you give to any budding shoe designers?

Persevere! Starting a fashion label takes a lot of energy and you need to carry on with it every-day! Pushing for buyers, consumers and journalists to hear about the brand!! You have to carry on and keep going with it!

And finally what shoes are you wearing today?

Ok, so these shoes are the 130mm Cerise heel in Black Satin xx
