Wedding Weds: Bridal Updo inspiration

21st August 2013

I’m in the midst of wedding hair trials so have been collecting plenty of inspiration to take to my appointments. For the Hindu wedding I’ve been looking at low bun options for two reasons- firstly the Mr. and I are around the same height (I’m 5’9) and secondly I want to have my dupatta draped over a low bun rather than the top of my head. I think the later option would just look too severe on me.

I’m still cooing over the canary yellow Victoria Beckham gown she wore at the event!

A note to all brides with dark hair (without any highlights) when looking for inspiration remember that any styles on brides with highlights (esp blonde brides) will look very different on you. All the different hair tones add more interest to the hairstyle. This is not me saying to go get your hair dyed! just to be aware of the differences!

Wedding Weds: Ivory Bridal Shoes

14th August 2013

I’ve noticed on the ‘ole wedding blogosphere that Indian brides have a penchant for Jimmy Choos (or Jimmy Choo-esque) heels when it comes to the big day. There are lots of exciting alternatives (not that I’m saying there’s anything wrong with Mr.Choo!) and in today’s wedding Wednesday I’m sharing the work of some other exciting designers.

Harriet Wilde, Sakura B Ivory, £449.99

Ruth Shaw the designer behind the label only designs wedding shoes and the collection is known for its quality and vintage feel to the designs. I’m smitten with these Sakura B Pumps with metal flowers on the heel.

Aruna Seth, Farfalla in Ivory Tulle Lace, £595

I love this pretty lace version of the classic Farfalla and the other fab thing is that she offers several of her styles in a high and low heel. Esp great if you’re either not good in high heels or like me are the same height as the Mr.

Emmy, Eva, £495

All of Emmy’s collection is soooo pretty esp this pretty pump with 20’s art deco-esque detailing.

Charlotte Olympia, Runaway Bride, Belinda, £975

Charlotte Olympia is one of the hottest Brit talents out there. Her Runaway Bride collection is for the bride that’s looking for something a little different and this pair def makes a statement.

Freya Rose, Kelly, £195

Freya Rose has a large collection of Bridal shoes and accessories. They also have these shoe clips, were a rose or bow can be clipped onto your plain pumps to make them more bridal-y.

PCJ Delhi Couture Week 2013: Sabyasachi

12th August 2013

Sabyasachi opened PCJ Delhi Couture Week with a beauty of a collection titled ‘Opium Dream’ and in turn silenced any murmurs of criticisms that lingered from his dressing Vidya Balan at Cannes. I loved it all. The muted colour palette and toile de jouy fabrics were beautifully enhanced with tilla and zardozi work, hand embroidery and applique. And as always Sabyasachi’s work was all about an understated luxury with an old world charm. It was interesting to see Sabyasachi work with sequin embellishment, he used it more as another texture to add depth and interest to tone on tone pieces. Beautiful I say just Beautiful!

India Bridal Fashion Week 2013: Part 2: Falguni & Shane Peacock, Raghavendra Rathore & Rohit Bahl

1st August

Day 3: Falguni & Shane Peacock and Raghavendra Rathore

Falguni & Shane Peacock

I’ve already been pretty vocal about my opinion on Falguni & Shane Peacock’s work here and their latest offering hasn’t made me change my mind. They are two of India’s greatest design talents and their talents lie in non-ethnic wear. Their ethnic wear is just soooo bland in comparison and so different to their mainline style! I’m grudgingly posting a few pics from the show!

Raghavendra Rathore

Overall, I have to say I wasn’t keen on Raghavendra Rathore’s collection. Although the antique gold embellishment was beautiful the fact that it was pretty much the only type of embroidery in the show made it become a little monotonous. I did like some of the more Middle-Eastern silhouettes- the Kaftans and Abayas not sure if they were really Bridal wear though. And the menswear- hmmm, I like the fact it was different but whether it was good different I’m not sure. What do you make of the collection?

Day 4: Rohit Bahl

Rohit Bal’s show was OMG, WOW, WOW, WOW! Now this is what you call a Bridal collection. Beautiful Victoriana influences met with regal Indian colours, embroideries and silhouettes that just screamed LUXURY. Enough of my babbling enjoy the pictures!

India Bridal Fashion Week: Part 1: JJ Valaya, Shantanu & Nikhil, Kotwara by Meera & Muzaffar Ali and Jyostna Tiwari

30th July 2013

Get ready for two weeks of all things WEDDING on The Asian Fashion Journal! I will be covering India Bridal Fashion Week in three parts and will be introducing a new regular on the blog tomorrow- Wedding Wednesday!

Day 1: JJ VALAYA & SHANTANU & NIKHIL

JJ VALAYA

JJ Valaya kicked off the week. His signature rich and opulent Mughal Maharanis & Maharajas were this season given an Iberian twist. Beautiful rose embroideries reminiscent of traditional flamenco scarves, a palette of blacks, whites, reds and blues as well as bolero-esque and off the shoulder shapes all hinted at his Spanish inspiration.

I’m not sure about the long jacket over the Sari on the left, what do you think? but love the Trompe L’Oeil jewelry on the far right.

Sheer Paneling and Off the Shoulder detailing at JJ Valaya IBFW

HOT TREND ALERT: Manish Malhotra’s last collection featured sheer paneling between borders on lenghas and anarkalis and JJ Valaya showed a few examples here too. If two of the biggest names in Indian fashion are championing sheer paneling you know its def a HOT, HOT, HOT Trend.

JJ Valaya styled some of the saris with sari purses on a sari belt. I really don’t like this- it reminds me of a bum bag (or fanny pack) !

SHANTANU & NIKHIL

Shantanu & Nikhil collection was a little hit and miss for me. The menswear as usual was Ah-mazing but the womenswear was not as strong or cohesive. I loved the white and gold gowns that opened the show but the jacket silhouette that followed and was repeated through the collection was sooo unflattering and the simple grey and ochre outfits were just to simple for bridal wear.

Shantanu & Nikhil, India Bridal Fashion week, 2013, IFBW, white, gold, sari, lenghas, bridal, bride, india, fashion

Shantanu & Nikhil Whites & Golds IBFW 2013

Like I said I did love the white & gold gowns but I did think they were pretty similar to Marchesa’s gowns. Especially the middle one which looked similar to this gown that Naomi Watts wore last year. What do you think?

Shantanu & Nikhil, India Bridal Fashion week, 2013, IFBW, white, gold, sari, lenghas, bridal, bride, india, fashion

Styles I didn’t like from Shantanu & Nikhil’s IBFW 2013 collection

I didn’t like these styles the middle is the jacket silhouette I mentioned earlier and the outfits either side are just too plain for Bridal wear.

The yummy menswear, LOVE it all.

Day 2: Kotwara by Meera & Muzaffar Ali & Jyostna Tiwari

MEERA & MUZAFFAR ALI

Meera & Muzaffar Ali’s collection is my fav so far. I love the delicate colour palette and the beautiful examples of chikankari work and delicate embellishment. It’s one of those collections that would have been great to see up close. I wasn’t too keen on the long jackets over saris that JJ Valaya showed but here they work well in sheer embellished fabrics that enhance the sari or lengha instead of just covering it.

Jyostna Tiwari

For the most part Jyostna Tiwari’s colour combinations were a little too loud and bling tastic for me but there were a couple of beautiful cocktail saris that I had to include! I think the blue sari would make a fab statement at a wedding reception.

25th July 2013

There’s just something magical about Tarun Tahiliani’s Bridal Couture- the beauty of thousands of years old artistry and craftsmanship combining with the vision of such a talent. Last week Tarun presented his ‘Tarun Tahiliani Couture Exposition 2013’ at DLF Emporio Delhi where he showcased his latest work. I would have loved to have been there to see the work up close : ( but at least I found these stunning shots of to accompany the Exposition. Enjoy!

Vogue India Guest Blog Post: Pakistan Fashion Week in London

11th July 2013

Here’s a re-blog of my latest guest blog post for Vogue. In on the recent Pakistan Fashion Week in London…..

Blogger Nina Patel highlights noteworthy designers from a sea of rich velvets and Mughal craftsmanship at a recent showcase of Pakistani fashion

1 July

Over here in the U.K. access to Asian designer wear is limited. There are a handful of boutiques in London and some one-off fashion events throughout the year. One summer event that’s become a popular fixture is Riwayat presents Pakistan Fashion Week — a two day shopping and catwalk event in June which brings to London some of the biggest names in Pakistani fashion.

This year the designer line-up was impressive and many were showcasing brand new collections, so I made sure I was there for all the shows.

RIZWAN AHMED

Rizwan Ahmed’s collection was another highlight. I talked to Rizwan about his inspirations for this collection.

“My theme and title for this collection is pastels and the inspiration is a woman living here in the U.K. Summer’s here in U.K. and I thought to do something soft but very elegant. It’s flowy, it’s a lot of volume and the colours remain pastel,” says Rizwan.

I asked Rizwan how important it is for him to show in London.

“I’ve been associated with them [Riwayat] since PFW2, then PFW3, I did Alchemy, I did the trunk show and this is the fourth time. I have hopes here, I have fans, I have customers and I have clientele waiting for the new collection to be revealed. I am the only competition to myself,” says the designer.

Below are the highlights of his show.

RANA NOMAN

Rana Noman’s collection was my favourite. There was an emphasis on traditional craftsmanship and detailing which I found more refined and striking than some of the other bling-tastic collections.

I asked Rana about his inspiration.

“My collection for PFW4 is Naksh Kari which is inspired by the artisanal work done during the Mughal era, in the architecture, patterns, the textiles prints, the kalamkari, the colours, the fabrics that were used. It’s mixing together the old and making it into something appropriate for nowadays,” he says.

In between shows I went backstage with my camera to get close-ups of show accessories and embroidery techniques.

I found beautiful ethnic jewellery, hair ornamentation and hats.

Bridal details at ‘Riwayat presents Pakistan Fashion Week 4’

27th June 2013

I was kindly given FROW seats at the recent ‘Riwayat presents Pakistan Fashion Week 4’. I didn’t think there were enough designers showing (there were 21 showing, several of which were lawn textile collections) for me to do my usual trend report. So, I’ve decided to put together a Bridal details/highlights report instead.

Headwear

Headwear came in the form of fascinators, elaborate Matha Pattis and stunning Mughal inspired pieces and made an interesting change to just seeing a draped dupatta covering the head. SRA’s headwear pieces were beautiful and the showstoppers piece made a huge statement.

Headwear 1L-R Bombay Stores, Gul Ahmed Textiles & Waseem Noor

Headwear 2L-R SRA- Sara Rohael Asghar The show stopper’s headpiece definitely made a statement. The head piece in the far right pic was my fav and the back detail was as pretty as the front.

Trailing hems

As I’m not so familiar with Pakistani fashion I don’t know if the trails at the back of the garment is something that’s been around for a while or not. I’ve picked out a few trailing hems which really were quite long. SRA had even added an extra flounce piece to the hems to add even more length to the garment.

TrailsL-R Naurangg by Uzma Shah & Moeezza Rabbani, Rana Noman & Rizwan Ahmed

Trails 2L-R SRA, Surrekham- Shehla Shaharyar, SRA

Velvets

Some rich velvet bridal pieces were shown in a few collections. I like the regal and luxurious tone the fabric brings to the pieces.

Velvet 2L-R Rana Noman & SRA

Velvet 1L-R Bombay Stores & Naurangg by Uzma Shah & Moeezza Rabbani

Dip Hems

I know dip hems (shorter at the front- longer at the back) have been around for a while and here’s some of my fav examples for PFW4

dip hemsL-R Naumeen Afreen, Rizwan Ahmed & Tasmiya

Back Details

The highlight of being on the front row was noticing all the details and there were some pretty back details. The split backs at Tasimayah and Zeeshan Bariwala and I loved Rana Noman’s sari blouse back detail (screams Bipasha Basu doesn’t it?)

Back details 1L-R Rana Noman, Rana Noman & Rizwan Ahmed

back details 2L-R Shakir Designs, Tasmiyah & Zeeshan Bariwala

I’ve got to finish my post with my favourite piece from PFW4. It’s by Nauman Afreen and the picture really doesn’t do it justice. The tone on tone embroidery was just so yum and that delicate shade of grey with a flash of fuchsia all made it so elegant. (yep I want it! Lol )

Lakme Fashion Week Summer Resort 2012 : Vikram Phandis

Bar the bizaree head wear this collection was a stunner. Vikram Phandis collection started with some elegant cream/ivory/gold pieces and were followed by some beautiful vintage floral printed pieces that were mixed with gold embridered black velvets. The whole collection had a Mughal inspired flavour, more than a little nod to Sabyasachi’s Winter Festive collection I think…

Lakme Fashion Week Summer Resort 2012: Payal Singhal

10th March 2012

I LOVED Payal Singhal’s last collection and as gorgeous as this collection is, it just for me isn’t as WOW as her last. I love all the new embroidery techniques she’s used- the mix of heavy encrusted stone work mixed with delicate filgree work. The colour palette is refined as ever as is her mixing of jaquards, silks and embroidery. The reason I don’t think its as Wow as her last is down to her silhouettes, she looked to a Midsummer Night’s Dream for inspiration and some of the empire line, dropped waist styles and full bottoms are just not that flattering to the figure. I say this (I’m probably being uber-critical) but she still is one of the best bridal designers and there are a few pieces that will be making their way into my wardrobe!

Absolutely stunning piece!
