Friday Five: Bobbi Brown Products

2nd August 2013

I haven’t done a beauty type post in a while and seeing as Bobbi Brown just opened a store in India I thought I’d share my five favourite products from her cosmetics range. I’m a bit of a make up dud- (my fifteen year old cousin is more of a master of make up then I am) so Bobbi Brown’s free consultations have been great at showing me which products suit my skin and importantly how to apply them. So here’s my fav five products:

Bobbi Brown: Protective Face Base SPF 50

I’ve talked about my previous problems with adult acne before and as a result I see a dermatologist and facialist regularly. The one thing they always talk about is the importance of wearing a high factor sunscreen daily- to help prevent pigmentation from acne scarring and of course to slow down the signs of aging. I’ve tried Thalgo and La Roche-Posay’s SPF 50 creams before and found them too greasy on my oily skin but Bobbi Brown’s Protective Face Base SPF 50 works well on my skin type and is hopefully helping to keep those wrinkles at bay.

Bobbi Brown, SPF 50, Face base, blusher, blush, cranberry, Bronze, Shimmer brick, Make-up, eye shadow, Indian skin, foundation

Bobbi Brown: Eye Shadow: Mahogany

The Mr. and I used to live in Liverpool where the girls are known for their strong (sometimes OTT tattoo-like) brows and what did the Bobbi Brown make up artist in Liverpool recommend? Yep powdering in my eyebrows! I wasn’t too sure about her suggestion at first but once she’d done it- I did like it. I have a few sparse patches and just brushing on the powder evens out my brows and does make them look better.

Bobbi Brown: Skin Foundation SPF 15: Honey 5

This was the first foundation I bought and I did deviate a few times to try out other brands foundations but I’ve come back to Bobbi Brown. The colour matches my skin tone, blends in well and I just really like the light consistency. You don’t feel like you’re wearing lots of make-up.

Bobbi Brown: Blush: Cranberry

I like a bit of Blush and at the moment its Bobbi Brown’s Cranberry that I reach for.

Bobbi Brown: Bronze Shimmer Brick

I use Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick when I’m going out in the evening. It’s easy to use and just adds a bit of a bronze glow to the skin.

3 Ways to Fight Acne

4th April 2013

Acne sucks! I know because I’ve been there. My teenage years passed by spot free but at the grand old age of 23 I developed Adult Acne on my face. The emotional and physical (yep I said physical- I found the lumps and bumps painful!) trauma can be devastating.

AnnaLynne-McCord-Make-Up-Free-tweetEven celebs can’t escape the dreaded spots. Cameron Diaz, Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry and AnnaLynne-McCord are just some of the sufferers. And how brave & inspiring is AnnaLynne to tweet her make up free skin?!

Get Help

The first thing to do is get professional help. Go to your GP and see what they can prescribe. My doctor gave me a topical lotion which reduced the inflammation but didn’t clear my skin. I was then referred to a Dermatologist who was in a word USELESS. I’m sure many of you will have come across many unhelpful GPs/Dermatologists but I’d advise you to persevere. I did and ended up seeing the fantastic Prof. Chu a dermatologist that specialises in treating acne. The treatment plan he tailored for me cleared up my acne in weeks.

Get Healthy

Eat well and exercise regularly. Try to maintain a diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables and hit the gym or go for a walk. Exercise releases serotonin the happy hormone and can help combat stress which can be a major cause of acne. Also make sure you ditch the fizzy drinks for water instead- keeping you’re body hydrated will help to boost energy levels and can help clear the skin.

Get the right skincare routine

Keep your skin clean by using a mild cleanser and moisturiser morning and night (I’d recommend the Simple & Johnson & Johnson ranges) and try not to touch or pick at skin! All you’ll be doing is spreading germs and disturbing the skin unnecessarily. As for wearing make up while you have acne opt for a mineral make up range that won’t clog your pores. The colours for darker skin have got a lot better over the years and I’d recommend the Bare Minerals range. Make sure you wash your make up brushes/sponges regularly.

Next week I’ll share the treatments I have had to reduce acne scarring as well as a list of the skincare products I use.

Leighton Denny: Mine’s A Rose

26th Feb 2013

Over London Fashion Week, Love For Fashion blogger Meera Sharma and I popped into Fashion Monitor’s Style Lounge. Not only did they treat journo’s and bloggers with a chill out space at The Mayfair Hotel, they also offered a range of treats from getting hair done, a Bourjois make over, a massage or a manicure. I opted for the mani and went for the Mine’s A Rose from Leighton Denny’s S/s 13- The Riviera Collection. I think it’s the perfect nude shade for Indian skin. I usually find nude shades either too close to my skin colour or a little too pinky this one really is perfect.

Ignore the nail smudges that’s my fault for being too impatient and not letting the polish dry properly!

60’s Beauty trend

25th Jan 2013

For S/s 13 several designers took inspiration from the 1960’s- Holly Fulton and Prada refrenced flower power, Marc Jacobs channelled Edie Sedgewick and over at Louis Vuitton he opted for 60’s geo prints and patterns. Hair and make-up at the shows also took a retro turn. Skin was fresh and youthful with soft kohl eyeliner the focus of the make-up. For hair the beehive made an apperance all over the place with ribbon bows or alice bands to add that nostalgic touch.

Adele, Lana Del Ray and Sophie Ellis Bextor are all known for their signature retro beauty looks.

Ohhh and this week I spotted an early adopter of the trend over at B-Town. Anushka Sharma’s wowed at the Filmfare awards with her beehive and retro liner which was right on trend (as was her canary yellow Victoria Beckham gown)

And talking of B-Town I had to take share some imagery of Asha Parekh, Helen and Sharmila Tagore working the trend the first time around.

Friday Fives: Beauty

11th Jan 2013

This week’s Friday fives are my last five beauty purchases. I haven’t written many beauty posts and the reason’s simple- I am pretty clueless when it comes to make-up and ridiculously unadventurous in trying new trends. Ummm I’ve only just got my head around BB creams and the beauty/fash packs according to the glossies have moved on to CC creams? I might have heard of CC creams but do I know what they really are or which is the best? Nope- not a clueeeeee. Well seeing as it’s a new year I am going to try to master some eye shadow colours that aren’t gold or bronze and to whack on a bright lippy now and then. (I made a start- look below!)

11 jan 1

Burt’s Bees lip balm. It’s full on ugghhh winter in London and I alternate between Burt’s and Carmex.

M.A.C Ruby Woo- it is true this shade really does suit every skin colour (check out the video I made with make-up artist Dipali Damji on how to apply bright lippy here)

Shahnaz Husain Shamoist Plus Intensive Moisturising- I recently tried out a sample of this product and found it really soothing on my dull winter skin so have just ordered it online.

11 jan 2

M.A.C Hanging Loose Dirty Pink Nude. I thought I’d get on the S/s 13 nude nails bandwagon. I like this easy shade from M.A.C’s Apres- Chic collection.

Rimmel Exaggerate Eyeliner. I’ve been using this eyeliner for years. The long nib makes it super easy to use and perfect for adding a retro flick and unlike some other brands the colour stays a true black on dark skin too.

Chanel Pop Up Covent Garden

17th August 2012

I had some time to kill last week before a meeting and found myself wandering into the ohhh sooo enchanting Chanel pop up store in Covent Garden. All the delicious make-up and heavenly scents were beautifully displayed and it was impossible for me to leave empty handed! I even had my nails done in their treatment area downstairs (The price of a manicure is redeemable against any purchases) Seeing as its all about purple for A/w 12 I went for a vampy deep purple nail varnish called Vendetta. It looks almost black in some light. I also bought a lipstick; I thought it’s about time I graduate from just lipgloss and the pretty Paradis colour is an easy colour for me to wear.

In the sunlight you can see purple sheen.

Prabuddha Dasgupta : A tribute

13th August 2012

The fashion industry mourns the loss of a leading light with the recent death of Prabuddha Dasgupta. His body of work marks him out as one of India’s most progressive photographers from the controversial ‘Women’ a collection of portraits and nudes of urban Indian women to Ladakh a stunning exploration of the wilderness of Tibet and of course his commissions by Hermes, Louis Vuitton, GQ, L’officiel and Vogue

Essie: Off the shoulder Summer 2012

13th July 2012

Every girl has a beauty indulgence that they never forgo and mine is my pedicures! After two weeks of sandals and flip-flops my feet needed a little pampering (I’ll be posting my hol pics soon) The Essie Summer 12 collection was in the salon and I ummmed and ahhhhed about going for the hot trend choice with the bikini so teeny (the powder blue one) but when it came down to it I choose the easier Off the Shoulder pink. It’s described by Essie as a hot pink but I think the colour slightly softer and the colour looks more creamy than a true hot pink (If that makes any sense!)

From L-R Fear or Desire, Off the Shoulder, Cascade Cool, Bikini so Teeny, All Tied Up and Mojito Madness

Again my creative pic taking is dubious but you get to see the colour on my skin tone. I’m wearing my Dune Head Over Heels leopard sandals.

Vitage Skin Defence SPF 30

7th June 2012

I went for a red light facial last week, it’s brilliant for rejuevenating the skin by increasing collagen production. (It’s especially beneficial for acne prone skin as it calms down the sebum production and helps with the scarring also) So, my therapist was out of my usual sun protector and I bought the Vitage instead and it’s brilliant. It’s a lightweight moisturising cream that is infused with anti-inflammatory PhytoTerra Organic Mate, anti oxidant rich Rosamine Vitamins, Sodium Hyaloronate and Aloe Vera. Ok, so not entirely sure what all of that means apart from the aloe vera and anti-oxidant bit! but it feels great and is importantly protecting my face from harmful rays (i’m not ready for wrinkles yet!)

I used to be a fan of Vitage’s daily cleanser but I got so fed up with the pump breaking so I switched brands! Even though it’s a fab product. They’ve had a re-design of the packaging and although this new pump is sturdier it does get blocked easily but it’s easier to fix- just block the nozzle and pump a few times which will get the cream flowing again.

I’d highly recommend this product and it’s only £22 for a 100ml

You can buy this product at Beauty Bay
