India Bridal Fashion Week: Part 1: JJ Valaya, Shantanu & Nikhil, Kotwara by Meera & Muzaffar Ali and Jyostna Tiwari

30th July 2013

Get ready for two weeks of all things WEDDING on The Asian Fashion Journal! I will be covering India Bridal Fashion Week in three parts and will be introducing a new regular on the blog tomorrow- Wedding Wednesday!

Day 1: JJ VALAYA & SHANTANU & NIKHIL

JJ VALAYA

JJ Valaya kicked off the week. His signature rich and opulent Mughal Maharanis & Maharajas were this season given an Iberian twist. Beautiful rose embroideries reminiscent of traditional flamenco scarves, a palette of blacks, whites, reds and blues as well as bolero-esque and off the shoulder shapes all hinted at his Spanish inspiration.

Whites & Golds @ JJ Valaya IBFW

I’m not sure about the long jacket over the Sari on the left, what do you think? but love the Trompe L’Oeil jewelry on the far right.

Sheer Paneling and Off the Shoulder detailing at JJ Valaya IBFW

HOT TREND ALERT: Manish Malhotra’s last collection featured sheer paneling between borders on lenghas and anarkalis and JJ Valaya showed a few examples here too. If two of the biggest names in Indian fashion are championing sheer paneling you know its def a HOT, HOT, HOT Trend.

JJ Valaya styled some of the saris with sari purses on a sari belt. I really don’t like this- it reminds me of a bum bag (or fanny pack) !

Showstoppers Kabir Bedi & Kangana Ranaut

SHANTANU & NIKHIL

Shantanu & Nikhil collection was a little hit and miss for me. The menswear as usual was Ah-mazing but the womenswear was not as strong or cohesive. I loved the white and gold gowns that opened the show but the jacket silhouette that followed and was repeated through the collection was sooo unflattering and the simple grey and ochre outfits were just to simple for bridal wear.

Shantanu & Nikhil Whites & Golds IBFW 2013

Like I said I did love the white & gold gowns but I did think they were pretty similar to Marchesa’s gowns. Especially the middle one which looked similar to this gown that Naomi Watts wore last year. What do you think?

Styles I didn’t like from Shantanu & Nikhil’s IBFW 2013 collection

I didn’t like these styles the middle is the jacket silhouette I mentioned earlier and the outfits either side are just too plain for Bridal wear.

The yummy menswear, LOVE it all.

Day 2: Kotwara by Meera & Muzaffar Ali & Jyostna Tiwari

MEERA & MUZAFFAR ALI

Meera & Muzaffar Ali’s collection is my fav so far. I love the delicate colour palette and the beautiful examples of chikankari work and delicate embellishment. It’s one of those collections that would have been great to see up close. I wasn’t too keen on the long jackets over saris that JJ Valaya showed but here they work well in sheer embellished fabrics that enhance the sari or lengha instead of just covering it.

Jyostna Tiwari

For the most part Jyostna Tiwari’s colour combinations were a little too loud and bling tastic for me but there were a couple of beautiful cocktail saris that I had to include! I think the blue sari would make a fab statement at a wedding reception.

Spotlight: Rajni Perera

23rd July 2013

Procrastinating (yep, surfing the internet instead of working) led me to the work of Rajni Perera. Her website bio reads…

“I am a Toronto-based artist whose work floats in the space between Western and Immigrant culture. Blending the visual languages of ethnography, archaeology, astronomy and the indexical sciences, the work becomes a record of impossible discoveries and mythical creations.”

and I’m a fan of her latest work the ‘Maharani’ prints series in which she adds a pop art spin to sepia portrait prints transforming her Maharanis into mythical creatures. See if you can spot a familiar face.

Friday Fives: VALLIYAN by Nitya S/s 13

19th July 2013

Recently my Friday Fives have been all about accessories and I continue this week by sharing Valliyan by Nitya– S/s 13 collection. The label was founded in 2008 by Nithya Arora who instantly wowed the fash pack with her distinctive designs which her bio describes as…

“….reflect (ing) a sculptural textured quality, entirely handcrafted in India and most of the pieces are one of a kind. In her collections one can see vintage influences, bright Indian hues and detail, topped with a New York edge.”

Her roll call of Bolly fans is endless and her pieces regularly grace the pages of the Vogue India, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire & Grazia. And last year she won Grazia’s Young Designers Award for Best Accessories Designer last year.

As regular readers know I’m partial to a pretty look book and this one is ohh soo pretty. The images were shot by Prarthna Singh and have a Lula magazine (my fav magazine!) editorial vibe. Enjoy!

Sonakshi Sinha, Frieda Pinto & Sonam Kapoor work S/s 13 pant suit trend

18th July 2013

Pant suits have been spotted all over the catwalks and there are so many variations on the trend. White on white suits were seen at Gucci and Haider Ackermann. Head to Toe floral pant suits were seen at Erdem and Ashish n Soni. Pop block colour were big at Micheal Kors, Stella McCartney and Gucci and not forgetting the cute graphic print short suits at Louis Vuitton & Dolce & Gabbana.

Friday Fives: Five trends I won’t be wearing

12th July 2013

Ok so I work in fashion and I design trend- led pieces for the high street but whether I wear them is another matter entirely. Trends I have been wearing at the mo are head to toe colour, white on white, print pants/trousers and I still pop a peplum now and then but on the flip side there are some popular trends that I have left well alone. As much as I may admire them on other people on me its a no-no and here they are…

Crop tops

Right the only time my jelly belly goes on display in public is when I’m in a bikini on a beach! I do quite like the way some celebs rock the look with a high waist pant/skirt and a blazer so there’s just a glimpse of bare midriff. It is a flattering way of working a crop but nonetheless I’ll be passing on this trend.

Sonam Kapoor InstagramSonam working the crop in such a chic way in Anamika Khanna.

Buttoned up shirts

Yes, I am the only girl left on the planet that refuses to button my shirt all the way up! I just feel like it makes me look like I’m smuggling huge melons under my blouse (and my boobs really aren’t big!)

‘Cheeky’ Micro shorts

Rihanna in her ‘cheeky’ micro shorts- nope no way I’m wearing a pair of these!

Dungarees

I quite like dungarees on other people but on me its just way too much ‘Bob the Builder’ terrority!

Beanies

Cara Delevingne is responsible for this trend and she and her fans always have a beanie on. I am gonna simply say I’m way TOO old and too square to wear this trend! Lol

Vogue India Guest Blog Post: Pakistan Fashion Week in London

11th July 2013

Here’s a re-blog of my latest guest blog post for Vogue. In on the recent Pakistan Fashion Week in London…..

Blogger Nina Patel highlights noteworthy designers from a sea of rich velvets and Mughal craftsmanship at a recent showcase of Pakistani fashion

1 July

Over here in the U.K. access to Asian designer wear is limited. There are a handful of boutiques in London and some one-off fashion events throughout the year. One summer event that’s become a popular fixture is Riwayat presents Pakistan Fashion Week — a two day shopping and catwalk event in June which brings to London some of the biggest names in Pakistani fashion.

This year the designer line-up was impressive and many were showcasing brand new collections, so I made sure I was there for all the shows.

RIZWAN AHMED

Rizwan Ahmed’s collection was another highlight. I talked to Rizwan about his inspirations for this collection.

“My theme and title for this collection is pastels and the inspiration is a woman living here in the U.K. Summer’s here in U.K. and I thought to do something soft but very elegant. It’s flowy, it’s a lot of volume and the colours remain pastel,” says Rizwan.

I asked Rizwan how important it is for him to show in London.

“I’ve been associated with them [Riwayat] since PFW2, then PFW3, I did Alchemy, I did the trunk show and this is the fourth time. I have hopes here, I have fans, I have customers and I have clientele waiting for the new collection to be revealed. I am the only competition to myself,” says the designer.

Below are the highlights of his show.

RANA NOMAN

Rana Noman’s collection was my favourite. There was an emphasis on traditional craftsmanship and detailing which I found more refined and striking than some of the other bling-tastic collections.

I asked Rana about his inspiration.

“My collection for PFW4 is Naksh Kari which is inspired by the artisanal work done during the Mughal era, in the architecture, patterns, the textiles prints, the kalamkari, the colours, the fabrics that were used. It’s mixing together the old and making it into something appropriate for nowadays,” he says.

In between shows I went backstage with my camera to get close-ups of show accessories and embroidery techniques.

I found beautiful ethnic jewellery, hair ornamentation and hats.

Diary of a collection: Mani Jassal

9th July 2013

It’s time for a new ‘Diary of a collection…’ post and I’m super duper excited to be introducing you to a fab up and coming fashion designer and stylist- Mani Jassal. The instantly recogonisable South Asian bridal colours and fabrics of Mani’s graduate collection are mixed together with Dior-esque full skirts, toned down embellishment and laser cut details that result in a chic update on the traditional. I love the fact that Mani’s been able to design a bridal collection that’s richness and opulence comes from the fabrics and interesting cuts and details rather than a whole lot of bling. Anyway time to hand over to the lady herself and enjoy the post!

August 2012

Brain storming begins! Got to figure out what my final collection is going to look like. Had to think of something that would look great at the Mass Exodus Runway show in April 2013. Eureka! Sitting there going through my Vogue India magazines thinking, would it not be cool if I were to do an Indian bridal wear collection? It would definitely be different, and something very different from what I have tried before.

September 2012

School begins, and the second week we come back we have an inspiration board due, along with 30 sketches due on the third week. I chose the architecture of the Taj Mahal as my inspiration, as it is so majestic and regal. I knew that this collection had to be different from the rest of bridal wear collections out there. I really wanted to push the boundaries of South Asian wedding traditions. I want the bride to be able to experiment and try different colours and textiles which are typically not used, like leathers.

This being the first time I have done an Indian collection, I was so confused with the amount of fabrics and trims that went into it. I had to figure out a way to make all of the fabrics work together and still be a cohesive collection.

Mani Jassal 2

October 2012

In order for this collection to be marketable, I had to interview many experts already in the Indian bridal scene. They gave me a lot of good advice about the best colors to use and to not use. Even though they told me not to use black, I still did because I think it is such an elegant and beautiful color if used correctly in the collection.

November 2012

All of the designs have been finalized and now it is time to begin making “muslins” – the rough version of the final outfit, to get the fit and style right, and then to maybe make corrections after that. A lot of late nights were spent at the labs at school, with some shedding of tears when things were just not going right. Ever week we had an outfit due, over a span of five weeks.

2 Diary of a Collection - Muslins

December 2012

Semester is over, and now time to start thinking about the first outfit that is due the first week when the next semester starts in January. Let the sewing and bejeweling begin!

Diary of a Collection-Process

January 2013- March 2013

Every other week starting in January a final outfit was due, with all of the final fabrics, trims and gems. A lot of handwork work went into this part of the collection, and I could not have done without my mom and her aunt. And again, a lot of late nights and little sleeping in the labs at school.

March 2013

It is finally over! The collection is done! Finally it is time to get it photographed professionally, and prepare the accessories for Mass Exodus.

4 Diary of a Collection-mass exodus1

April 11th 2013

The day that I have been working so hard for is finally here, the Mass Exodus Runway show. I had all my models ready, and I had a great make up artist and hair stylist waiting, who started working on the 5 models at 6 am. The show was a success, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

A big thank you to Mani for this fab guest post.
