Ram Leela

27th November 2013

I saw Ram Leela last week and had to post some stills. I absolutely loved the film- the cinematography, choreography, music and performances were just so dreamy and the costumes- what can I say- they made my jaw drop! Hats off to Anju Modi and Maxima Basu – they’ve both done an incredible job. They have managed to add a contemporary feel to the looks while celebrating traditional Gujurati craftmanship and textiles. Maxima was in charge of costumes for the principal cast including Ranveer’s wardrobe and some of Deepika’s ( the costume in the first pic was by Maxima). The rest of DP’s costumes were by Anju Modi. I read a fab interview with Anju Modi by Couture Rani about the film’s costumes- def worth a read!

Vogue India Guest Blog Post: Pernia Pops in London with Masaba

22nd November 2013

Here’s a re-blog of my latest guest blog post for Vogue India. I have to say it was soooo exciting to meet the first ladies of Indian fashion! They have both achieved so much in their careers and are two of the many exciting influencers that are making contemporary Indian fashion as exciting as it is…..

Blogger Nina Patel meets two of Indian fashion’s favourite ladies putting up a flash mob-style show for their overseas audience
Pernia Qureshi and Masaba Gupta popped up at London’s Montcalm hotel on Friday night to organise a fun and fabulous flash mob to support the work of three charities — Akshaya Patra, Pratham and Women’s India Association.

I managed to get a quick chat with Pernia and Masaba before the event to find out more about it and why they decided to get involved.

“Every couple of months, Pernia’s Pop-Up hosts different events and we always make sure we connect the event with a charity. So when Roshni came to me with this idea we thought it would be a great way to support these charities and to connect with our London audience,” says Qureshi.

“Pernia’s Pop-Up has bought Masaba here to do a really fun fashion show, it’s going to be flash mob style, something different for London, and everything that is shown here will be on Pernia’s Pop Up shop tomorrow. We’re showing a mix of Masaba’s latest collection mixed with her greatest hits that people can’t get enough of, like the hand print sari.”

I asked Masaba if she was aware of her UK audience.

“I know from my Twitter and my Insta feed how many people are buying my label and from where. Since we stock at Pernia’s Pop-Up, we know the response the clothes are getting and that London girls are fans of the label.”

I also asked Pernia how important the international market is for Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop.

“Very important,” says Qureshi. “I have always said our USP is that we are an Indian design platform for a global audience. Eventually, I want some unknown schoolgirl in Japan to being wearing Masaba. That’s my vision. I want people all over the world to know about Indian design because we have so much talent. We are so good at what we do that it’s a pity not enough people know about it.”

We also talked about how important it is for Pernia to be supporting new design talent and the fact that she is always looking out for new labels that haven’t had a platform in the past, like Ridhi Mehra, to add to the site.

Pernia said that new additions to the site will include footwear label Saint G and an ethnic label Malasa, which she’s excited about.

The event was sold out. Here are some pictures from the night.

Friday Fives: Fave looks from GQ India Men of the Year 2013

4th October 2013

Ummm yep, I really should be posting my fave men’s looks from the GQ India Awards but hey ho! Here’s my fave looks from the ladies in attendance. I am *shock horror* not including Sonam Kapoor on the list, she looked fab (I think she could work a bin bag and still look hot) but it just wasn’t one of my favourite looks. In fact I’m pleased to say that most of the looks I loved were by Indian designers.

Neha Dupia in Roberto Cavalli

Lisa Haydon in Kshitij Kankari

GQ Men of the year awards, 2013, Raghavendra Rathore, Shruti Haasan, India, fashion, Lisa Haydon, model, bollywood, Kshitij, Kankaria

Lisa looks soooo hot in this dress which shows off her killer body. Although I have to say Kshitij might have taken inspiration from the Prabal Gurung gown Deepika Padukone wore at the Filmfare awards.

Spotlight: Aruna Seth Interview

2nd October 2013

I missed this year’s Asian Achievers Awards but did take a look at the event’s Press Releases. It was fab to see that this year’s ceremony paid particular homage to female achievement and there was one nominee I was curious to find out more about- Aruna Seth. I’ve ft. her pretty pumps in an earlier blog post and was keen to interview the talented designer. And a few e-mails later here it is!
Thanks Aruna!

Aruna Seth, Farfalla, Butterfly, Shoes, Platform, Pumps, Slippers, Bridal, Bride, Wedding, ShoesPic of the glam designer.

Describe your brand in one sentence?

Luxury elegant and classic shoes!

What’s the story behind the label?

We started up the Aruna Seth brand 5 years ago. Aruna Seth was started as I wanted to create lovely shoes for the Red Carpets. I’ve always loved designer shoes, I owned a personal collection of 150 pairs before starting the Aruna Seth brand. I then studied footwear design at London College of Fashion, moved to Italy for a year to make the shoes in the same factory as Prada and the label Aruna Seth was born! I’ve achieved a great deal of what I wanted, I’ve seen the shoes on the Red Carpets of a great deal of celebrities!

Candy Rose, Leather, Aruna Seth, Bride, Bridal, Shoes, Pumps, Wedding How dreamy are these Candy Rose Leather Pumps with pastel gem detail?

Does your part Indian heritage influence your designs?

I love using colours and jewelled elements to Aruna Seth shoes! If you look at my red and emerald green designs etc they have certainly been influenced by India and the vivid colours from the region! India is a great place to visit to pick up new ideas and trims. Another great thing about India is the amount of events Indian ladies need to go to!

Describe your design process?

I oversee the whole process, from researching ideas, to drawing the ideas on paper! Aruna Seth is innovative and we are always on the look-out for new ideas for our shoe designs. For example our ‘Candy’ shoes have a new jewelled heel on that has been seen no-where else. I’ll travel to Italy to chat with the Artisans about how to create our designs and lasts! The shoes are made in small quantities by hand and I’ll fly over during manufacture to check the quality! It is an absolute joy seeing the shoes from drawing to end result as I’ll do most of the client appointments myself!

Aruna Seth, Snakeskin, AS350, Venus, Coral, Pair, Shoes, PlatformVenus Heels in Coral Suede and Roccia Python

What have been your personal highlights for the brand so far?

I adore Kate Hudson and she was spotted wearing my grey Farfalla shoes at a event at Annabels Night-club. We flew the Aruna Seth brand over to Los Angeles for an event pre-Golden Globes and Oscars! While we were out there I got invited to the Golden Globes myself, it was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget! It was amazing to be able to wear Aruna Seth shoes myself on the Red Carpets with an amazing dress!

What are your future plans for the brand?

We concentrated on the US for many years but we’ve seen the huge potential for ladies who love our shoes in India and Asia so we will be concentrating our efforts there from now on. It’s great because the ladies love our peep-toe shoes and the crystal butterfly for events. And ladies in India have a lot of events to attend and dress for! Especially the weddings and the lead-up to this!!

Venus, Black, Pitone, Pair, Aruna Seth, Farfalla, Platform, Pump, Slipper, Heels, Wedding, Bride, BridalVenus Heels in Black Suede and Black Python.

What tips would you give to any budding shoe designers?

Persevere! Starting a fashion label takes a lot of energy and you need to carry on with it every-day! Pushing for buyers, consumers and journalists to hear about the brand!! You have to carry on and keep going with it!

And finally what shoes are you wearing today?

Ok, so these shoes are the 130mm Cerise heel in Black Satin xx

Aruna Seth, Geoff, Black, Cerise, 120mm, Pumps, Shoes, Platform, heels, Wedding, Bridal, Bride,

And to all my Mumbai readers here’s a date for your diaries. There will be an exclusive Aruna Seth trunk show at the Four Seasons on 3rd Oct 2013 from 7pm onwards. RSVP @ info@arunaseth.com

Spotlight: Jeetinder Sandhu

30th September 2013

Oooohhh enjoy the print-tastic explosion via Jeetinder Sandhu GFW collection. I’m crushing on the pops of colour and tribal type elephant print! I actually discovered Jeetinder’s work through a post by Theresa from Retarded Velvet (another fab print design label) and decided I definitely had to share his work on my blog too. And check out the awesome short fashion film by Sebastian Mantilla
